For thousands of years, trade routes were considered important to the regional sustainability of every civilization. Those trade routes are now electronic.

Most people don’t equate network infrastructure with the rest of the layers of critical infrastructure that have been recognized throughout centuries as needed for global commerce. They should. The need to understand how maximizing those electronic trade routes is critical to maximizing the economic viability of a region.

As we look at both parties, their candidates and their campaign rhetoric of hope and change, there is a lot of talk about magically creating good jobs for people but little substance on how that’s going to be accomplished.

An H-1B visa is given to temporarily fill a job. What happens when that job is through? Over the years, I have written several columns about the overuse of H-1Bs and the false premise that there is a shortage of skilled technology workers in the United States.

BLUEPRINT FOR BIG BROADBAND: NOT BIG ENOUGH

EDUCAUSE’s latest white paper on America’s lack of broadband doesn’t shed light on the real issues.

After speaking about broadband connectivity at 1 gigabit or more at several conferences in January, one of the other speakers sent me an EDUCAUSE white paper entitled “A Blueprint For Big Broadband,” which was written by John Windhausen.

The EDUCAUSE group is made up of about 2,200 colleges and universities. Its white paper goes into detail on how the United States has failed to keep up with other parts of the world. While it’s a good attempt at providing a warning, their solution doesn’t get us close to where we need to be.

At this year’s Executive Club luncheon that focuses on the future of the economy for the year, the emphasis was “look to global initiatives for growth”. Over 1,200 people attended this luncheon, many looking for answers to:

- the mortgage foreclosure debacle,

- the outlook for jobs, and

- the general sense of where the U.S, economy is headed as well as how their career may be affected.
